Rope Swing (with 360 video)

Screen Shot 2018-11-16 at 22.16.23There is a very convenient rope swing of solid quality (in terms of both enjoyment and engineering) in Bristol on a route that I regularly walk on the way to and from university. It is hanging from a mature plane tree amongst a small woodland between the Jessop Underpass and Riverside Garden Centre in Bedminster (see screenshot below), and has so far been sturdy enough for a good swing in pleasant to slightly-windy conditions. More conditions are yet to be tested so if you fancy your own swing, do so at your own risk!

A few Saturdays ago, Emily came to visit for the weekend. En route to Clifton Suspension Bridge for some views over the city with its hot air balloons bobbing around, we stopped at the swing for a speedy rotation.

Having hired a GoPro Fusion – a 360 camera – from university, we took the chance to try it out and get some wack footage of us spinning around the conveniently sized device. GoPro offers free editing software, GoPro Fusion Studio, which makes editing the otherwise confusing shots relatively easy (I used DC Rainmaker’s review for help). There are loads of cool things you can do with 360 footage, but we thought that the Tiny Planet format worked best in this instance – have a watch of the video and see how wack the orbiting swing looks.

Happy swinging!!!

The location of the beast! Grid ref. approx. ST 56877 71934.
